Senstronics is a global manufacturer and supplier of pressure sensing solutions. At our recent Celebration Event, the Senstronics site in Newton Aycliffe received their Bronze award! Karen Nelson from Senstronics also won our County Durham Health Advocate of the Year award! Read on to find out how they have been getting on with the award so far!

Why did you decide to sign up to the BHAWA?
"At Senstronics, we have always believed that a healthy, supported workforce is key to driving success and innovation. Signing up for the Better Health at Work Awards felt like the perfect opportunity to strengthen our commitment to employee wellbeing. The award has given us a framework to build on, helping us to structure our efforts and ensure we are consistently creating a workplace where people feel valued and empowered to look after their health."
How do you find that the award benefits the organisation, and its employees?
"The Better Health at Work Awards has brought significant benefits to both Senstronics and our employees. For the organisation, it has provided a framework that helps us align our wellbeing efforts with our broader goals, ensuring they are meaningful and impactful. It has also reinforced our reputation as an employer that genuinely cares about its people, which is key to attracting and retaining talent.
For our employees, the award has opened the door to new opportunities for engagement and support. By introducing initiatives that focus on both physical and mental health, we’ve encouraged our team to take proactive steps towards their wellbeing. It has also helped create an environment where conversations around health are normalised, fostering a greater sense of connection and understanding among colleagues."
What kind of activities have you organised in line with the award so far?
"We’ve delivered a wide range of activities as part of the Better Health at Work Awards, and it has been fantastic to see how well they’ve been received by the team. Some of the key highlights include:
Movember Campaign: We ran events such as Take a Mo-Ment, which encouraged colleagues to take time for self-reflection and connection, while also sharing resources like Andy’s Man Club to support men’s mental health. We hosted Anthony Hutton’s Never Throw in the Towel project; Anthony delivered a talk about his own experiences with poor mental health and provided complimentary haircuts to those who agreed to chat with him in his pop-up barber’s chair.
Know Your Numbers Week: This campaign focused on raising awareness about cardiovascular health. Our Health Advocate Team provided on-site blood pressure readings, which were practical, accessible, and very well received by colleagues.
National Fitness Day: We invited a personal trainer to site, who led sessions in boxing, weight training, and stretching. It was brilliant to see so many employees get involved, with feedback highlighting the motivation and energy these sessions brought to the workplace.
Menopause Café: This event created a relaxed and supportive space where colleagues could enjoy a hot drink, share experiences, and discuss the menopause openly. It was one of our most well-attended initiatives and sparked valuable conversations about how we can better support colleagues.
Guided Meditation Session: We welcomed an Ayurvedic practitioner to deliver a guided meditation session, offering employees an opportunity to relax, recharge, and explore mindfulness techniques. The session was a unique addition to our wellbeing activities and received excellent feedback.
These activities have been instrumental in embedding health and wellbeing into the culture at Senstronics. The positive response from the team has been fantastic, and we’re excited to keep building on this momentum."
