December Shining Star: Parker Hannifin

Parker Hannifin are an American technology firm, with a site based in Birtley. Their Birtley site are relatively new to the Better Health at Work Award (BHAWA), but have already made great progress!

Why did you decide to sign up to the BHAWA?

At our site in Birtley we already had a High Performance Team (HPT) focused on Wellness, when we looked at the criteria for the BHAWA we noticed that what we were focusing on and promoting was a direct match to the BHAWA.

Other factors were the scheme is free, access to resources and support, the ability to network, and the external recognition for our Wellness High Performance Team.

How do you find that the award benefits the organisation, and its employees?

We are at the early stages however the information already received from the BHAWA team has been beneficial, allowing us to share information that we wound not have had access to previously.

A good example being our upcoming promotion of Breast Cancer awareness week where we have been able to arrange for external support from County Durham Cancer awareness team who will come to site with a stand and support our campaign.

Other benefits promoting a healthier environment not just for our employees but also their families, supporting employee engagement, increasing productivity, reducing absenteeism, and improving employee retention.

What kind of activities have you organised in line with the award so far?

  • In October we held a Breast Cancer Awareness campaign lasting all week

  • Promotion of alcohol awareness/Go Sober for October

  • Healthy eating week activities in June

  • Volunteering at the Birtley Hub, cleaning, decorating and minor repairs over the summer

  • Health Kiosk onsite for 4 weeks
